Park, who pitched a scoreless inning in relief April 7, now has a 10.38 ERA.

Hampered by what he said was a nonexistent slider, Park struggled to stay ahead in the count, allowing four runs in a 48-pitch first inning that lasted 27 minutes. Of the nine batters he faced in the first inning, six worked three-ball counts. Twice he got ahead of a hitter 0-2 only to allow a full count, the second of which resulted in a two-run single by Clint Barmes.

Ryan Howard and Brad Lidge are the sure things. Jimmy Rollins and Jamie Moyer are the known quantities. But what about the newcomers? What about the obvious holes in the roster? What about the lingering questions hovering over the season?
Here are five issues to keep an eye on for the next seven months:
1. Can Chan Ho Park make it through the season as the fifth starter? — Despite entering the spring third in a four-horse race for the final spot in the rotation, Park surprised the Phillies and earned the job. But how will he fare over the course of a full season? From 2002-05, he struggled mightily as a starter with the Rangers, who, like the Phillie,s have a hitter-friendly park. His best years have come in the pitching-friendly confines of Dodger Stadium, so his long-term success is a definite question mark.

They probably will be OK, but an injury to Madson or Lidge is the last thing this team needs right now.
4. Is the Phillies’ bench too old? — Chris Coste looked cooked at times last year, while Miguel Cairo and Matt Stairs’ best days are behind them. Greg Dobbs is still among the best in the business and Eric Bruntlett is a versatile reserve, but the Phillies’ bench may not prove to be as much of a strength as some are projecting.
5. Will the Phillies stay hungry? — Obviously, this is a good problem to have, but after the team won its first World Series in 28 years, it’s a fair point to wonder how the Phillies will respond to being the hunted. It remains to be seen if they’re as hungry as they were last season. Remember, no team has repeated this decade.

While both had similar numbers this spring, it is easy to see why the Phillies went with Park—for now.

Making him the No. 5 pitcher in the rotation does wonders for his confidence, and also team chemistry, as now Park will not go disgruntled into the bullpen. If he pitches badly and Happ takes his spot, Park will then have no one to blame but himself.

In his final spring training tuneup here Tuesday night, Brett Myers allowed one run in four innings and flashed his poker face when asked if he would be the Phillies' Opening Day starter.
"He didn't tell you?" manager Charlie Manuel said. "I didn't think he could keep a secret."
It's a secret no longer.
Myers, the Phillies' opening day starter for the past two seasons, will start the nationally televised opener Sunday night at Citizens Bank Park. He'll be followed in the rotation by Jamie Moyer (April 7), Joe Blanton (April 8) and Cole Hamels (April 10). Myers will start April 11 before Chan Ho Park starts April 12.
Last season, Myers went 10-13 with a 4.55 ERA. But he was 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA before the All-Star break and spent three weeks in the minors, then went 7-4 with a 3.06 ERA in his final 13 starts. He will be a free agent after this season.
"Brett can have any type of year that Brett wants to have," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "He's that talented. If he takes the same mindset out there every five days, there's no reason Brett can't have a big season."
Hamels initially was scheduled to make the opening night start.

When it was over, and the Phillies pitchers who were gathered in leftfield began their pregame stretch, Happ nodded his head, looked at Park and gave him a pat of his own.

The Phillies agreed. Happ allowed 18 hits and six walks, struck out 14 and posted a 3.15 ERA in 20 Grapefruit League innings. And ordinarily, that would have been enough. But Park notched a 2.53 ERA and a stellar strikeout-to-walk ratio of 25-to-2 in 21 1/3 innings.
