Making him the No. 5 pitcher in the rotation does wonders for his confidence, and also team chemistry, as now Park will not go disgruntled into the bullpen. If he pitches badly and Happ takes his spot, Park will then have no one to blame but himself.

In his final spring training tuneup here Tuesday night, Brett Myers allowed one run in four innings and flashed his poker face when asked if he would be the Phillies' Opening Day starter.
"He didn't tell you?" manager Charlie Manuel said. "I didn't think he could keep a secret."
It's a secret no longer.
Myers, the Phillies' opening day starter for the past two seasons, will start the nationally televised opener Sunday night at Citizens Bank Park. He'll be followed in the rotation by Jamie Moyer (April 7), Joe Blanton (April 8) and Cole Hamels (April 10). Myers will start April 11 before Chan Ho Park starts April 12.
Last season, Myers went 10-13 with a 4.55 ERA. But he was 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA before the All-Star break and spent three weeks in the minors, then went 7-4 with a 3.06 ERA in his final 13 starts. He will be a free agent after this season.
"Brett can have any type of year that Brett wants to have," pitching coach Rich Dubee said. "He's that talented. If he takes the same mindset out there every five days, there's no reason Brett can't have a big season."
Hamels initially was scheduled to make the opening night start.

I have spent this Spring Training rooting for JA Happ to earn the 5th spot in the rotation. It is not that I wanted Chan Ho Park to fail, but I have generally felt that Spring Training numbers are overvalued in making roster decisions. I have generally believed that the sample size is too small to base any decisions on, and so I thought Happ was the better option and wanted him to succeed and Park to fail. After all, Chan Ho Park faced 8,074 hitters in the major leagues, demonstrating that he is in fact mediocre. Right? Maybe not.

I checked for statistical significance-- in other words, I checked to see what the odds were of someone with a true skill level of 19.7% K/PA and 10.6% BB/PA getting 29.4% K/PA or more and getting 2.4% BB/PA or less by random chance. As it turns out, the odds of being 9.7% above his K/PA by luck when his skill level remained the same is 1.2%. The odds of being 8.2% below his BB/PA by luck is 0.7%.

These are both statistically significant-- very statistically significant. What this means is that something is very, very probably different. Some of this could be the quality of hitters faced or the level of competition of the hitters he does face, but it does seem to imply that something larger is different. A K/BB ratio of 12.5 for Park and just 2.33 for Happ is a huge difference. In general, I tend to believe that the team would be better off with a guy with league minimum salary anchoring the back of the rotation, since he would be able to do so for the next couple of years, but there is something different-- something statistically significantly different-- about this new Chan Ho Park. But who is he?

"The decision we make will come down to the wire I think," Amaro said. "We're all just gathering information and hopefully we'll make the right decisions on how we'll proceed. There are still some questions to take care of, with our bench, with our bullpen, with our rotation, so it's a puzzle we have to put together. Hopefully we'll get it right."

He was a part of the bullpen for our World Series team, so if we have confidence enough in him doing that at that stage of the game, then we should have confidence in him doing that if we get to that point. But none of those decisions have been made or finalized."

"If Park is in the rotation at the outset, that doesn't necessarily mean he's in it at the end of the year. If Happ is in the rotation in the beginning, it doesn't necessarily mean he's going to be in it in the end. It continues to be a fluid situation. Our fifth starter, at least lately, has not proved himself to be a bona fide guy you can throw out there 35 times. Neither of those guys have that label, so we can't count on that. We have to keep an open mind on how to approach it."
