Park, who made one awful start for the Mets in his only major league action in 2007, came back strong in 2008 with the Dodgers, going 4-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 54 appearances, mostly out of the bullpen.
As a starter, Park pitched five times, and went 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA. He threw 25 innings as a starter, an average of exactly five per appearance, and had 30 strikeouts. So that's good.
What's bad is that Park made three of his four starts at Dodger Stadium, and one in equally pitcher-friendly San Francisco. And for the season, Park had a 2.18 ERA in 45.1 innings at home, 4.50 in 50 innings on the road. And now he's coming to Philadelphia.
You might remember back to 2001, when Park was 15-11 with a 3.50 ERA. His line at Dodger Stadium that year was 10-4, 2.36 -- everywhere else it was 5-7, 4.83. Park then signed a big contract with the Texas Rangers and put up ERAs of 5.75, 7.58, 5.46 and 5.66 before they finally traded him to the Padres for Phil Nevin.
Exactly what has changed in the last seven years? Park is still awesome at Dodger Stadium, with a career ERA of 2.96 there, and a 5.16 mark everywhere else. The only difference is that he's coming to Philly for only one year, and that he's now 35 instead of the 29 he was when he went to Texas. As a starter or as a reliever, how does this make sense for Park or the team with the most hitter-friendly park in baseball?

The 35-year-old right-hander went 4-4 with a 3.40 ERA in 54 appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He was 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA as a starter and 3-4 with a 3.84 ERA in relief.
Park could compete with Kyle Kendrick, J.A. Happ and prospect Carlos Carrasco for the fifth spot in the rotation. Adam Eaton, under contract for $8.5 million this season, isn't in the mix.
A former All-Star in 2001, Park can earn an additional $2.5 million in performance bonuses.
He averaged 15 wins per season in a five-year span from 1997 to 2001 with the Dodgers. He was a combined 75-49 in that time with a career-high 18 wins in 2000. In 98 career relief appearances, Park is 5-7 with a 4.44 ERA.
"I'm very happy to be a Phillie," Park said. "It's an honor to be on a championship team. I was trying to beat them in the playoffs last year and now I'm trying to help them win another championship."
The Phillies beat the Dodgers in the NLCS in five games and defeated Tampa Bay in five games to capture their second World Series title.
Originally signed by the Dodgers in 1994, Park is 117-92 with a 4.34 ERA in 378 career games (280 starts) for Los Angeles, Texas, San Diego and the New York Mets.

그런데 세상에 왜 필리스가 선발투수가 될 수 있다고 합의하면서까지 박찬호와 계약했을까? 물론 그는 지난 시즌 훌륭한 한해를 보냈다. 그러나 그것은 불펜에서의 기록이다. 불펜투수로 던지는 것과 선발로 던지는 것은 큰 차이가 있다. 박찬호는 2009년 효과적인 선발투수가 될 수 있다는 것을 증명할 수 있는 그 어떤 것도 지난 10년간 보여주지 못했다.

여기서 잘한 일 (있나?), 루벤 아마로? 당신은 거의 10년 동안 선발 투수로 효과적이지 못한 선수와 선발투수로 계약했다. 만일 박찬호가 불펜에서 투구한다면 이번 이적은 더 많이 긍정적일 것이다. 왜냐하면 박찬호는 지난 시즌 동일한 역할로서는 매우 성공적이었기 때문이다.
그러나 만일 이번 계약으로 특히나 필리스가 Jamie Moyer와의 재계약에 더 이상 관심을 갖지 않는다는 것을 의미한다면 박찬호의 이적은 전혀 이치에 맞지 않은 계약이 될 것이다.
만일 박찬호가 선발이 된다면 이번 계약이 필라델피아 구단에게는 아무런 상승효과가 없을 것이다. 잘해야 박찬호는 제5 선발이 될 것이만, 아마도 십중팔구는 박찬호는 큰 실패작이 될 것이다.

Get ready for some moon balls, Phillies fans!
According to ESPN.com, the Phillies have signed Chan Ho Park to a one-year, $2.5 million contract to compete for a spot in the starting rotation.
This move has warning signs written all over it. Where to begin?
- Park has not been an effective starting pitcher since 2001.
- Park was one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball from 2002-2005 (never had an ERA below 5.50).
- Park still gives up the long ball (12 HR in 95 IP this season).
- Park has been a pretty bad pitcher everywhere he has gone besides Los Angeles.
So why in the world would the Phillies sign Park with the understanding that he would be a starter? Sure, he had a great year last year, but that was in the bullpen. There is a huge difference between pitching out of the pen and starting. Park has shown nothing over the past decade to prove that he will be an effective starter in 2009.
Furthermore, Park is a horrible fit for the Citizens Bank Park, which is one of the most hitter-friendly in baseball. As a fly ball pitcher, Park will be eaten alive in this ballpark, as ordinary fly balls will all of a sudden become extra base hits and home runs. I see a 5 or 6 ERA in Park's future.
It's good to see that Park was concerned as well though! From ESPN.com:
"I was a little worried about the Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Phillies, which is hitter-friendly," Park was quoted as saying in The Times. "But as they considered me a starter, I signed with Philadelphia."
At least Chan Ho still has some common sense. This is a great opportunity for him to start and make money, but in reality, this contract is simply setting him up for failure.
Nice work here, Ruben Amaro? you signed a pitcher who has not been an effective starting pitcher in almost a decade to be a starter. If Park was pitching out of the bullpen, this move would be a lot more positive because he was very successful in that role last season.
However, this move makes no sense, especially if it means that the Phillies are no longer interested in signing Jamie Moyer.
There is no upside on this deal for Philadelphia if Park is a starter. At best, Park is a fifth starter, but more than likely, he will be a disaster.

That leaves Park, J.A. Happ, Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco as candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation. Or, if Park goes to the bullpen, it gives manager Charlie Manuel the reliever capable of pitching multiple innings whom he's been seeking.
Park, 35, isn't expected to take his physical until January, so that situation remains in limbo. For now, Amaro declined to speculate on how he'll be used.

For the rotation, why not take a shot at Ben Sheets or Randy Wolf. Sheets may come at a big of a steeper price (maybe in the two-year, $30 million range) but if he can stay healthy, it would be a bargain for one of the most talented pitchers in all of baseball. Wolf would likely require a one-year contract, but he knows the city after pitching here for eight seasons.

The Phillies' starting rotation is going to be a bit older for the next two years.
And that's not necessarily a bad thing.
On Monday, Philadelphia agreed to terms on a two-year contract with veteran left-hander Jamie Moyer, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced in a press release.
The signing comes just hours after the Phillies signed free agent right-hander Chan Ho Park, who could be a spot starter in 2009, to a tentative agreement.
After filing for free agency in early November, the Phillies and 46-year-old Moyer were reportedly frustrated with negotiations. But late last week, SI.com reported that Philadelphia stayed late in the Winter Meetings not only to sign outfielder Raul Ibanez, but to try to iron out a contract to bring the 22-year Major League veteran back.
In his second full season with the Phillies, Moyer went 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA -- his best mark since 2003, with the Mariners -- in 33 starts. Moyer hasn't started fewer than 32 games in a season since 2000, with Seattle. He allowed three runs or fewer in 14 straight starts, from June 6-Aug. 21, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to do so since 1967.
"Jamie's going to do what he can to play out this contract and be an effective pitcher for us," Amaro Jr. said. "And if you ask Jamie, I would imagine he thinks he's going to play out many more contracts beyond it."
With Moyer's return, Philadelphia has four spots in the starting rotation locked up -- Cole Hamels, Brett Myers, Joe Blanton and Moyer. The fifth spot is likely to be decided between J.A. Happ, Kyle Kendrick, Carlos Carrasco and Park.

Philadelphia has a strong bullpen, with right-handers Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson setting up closer Brad Lidge. However, the Phillies need a fifth starter if they don’t re-sign left-hander Jamie Moyer. Another Phillies pitcher, Kyle Kendrick, has been mentioned in the three- or four-team trade that would send Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres to the Chicago Cubs.
Park has been a starter for most of his 13-year career but hasn’t been especially effective in that role since 2001.

He wasn't acquired until last Spring Training in a swap that eventually sent starter Jorge De La Rosa to the Colorado Rockies. Ramirez was a sleeper who awoke to his full potential.
Nunez's best work came early in the season, giving up runs in just one of his first 20 appearances. Then a strained right lat cost him nearly two months and he wasn't the same afterward, although he finished strong. In 45 games, he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.98 ERA.
The free-agent market includes some right-handed relievers who might pique the Royals' interest, such as Juan Cruz, Brandon Lyon, David Weathers, Doug Brocail, Chan Ho Park, Bobby Howry and Kyle Farnsworth, among others.
Two of the items on the Royals' offseason wish list seemingly have been filled.
