ANAHEIM -- Chan Ho Park has seen the heights of the Major Leagues, and the depths, so he knows exactly the significance of his spot start Saturday against the Angels.
"It's just one start," said the 34-year-old right-hander. "I know it's not set for my job. It's a test for me and I'll try to pitch the way I've been pitching."
That would be rather remarkably, considering that Park made it to the Major Leagues for only four innings last year, a seson in which he was released from two organizations. It will be Park's first Major League start since allowing seven runs in four innings for the Mets last year.
Park, the Dodgers' Opening Day starter in 2001, got the nod over Hong-Chih Kuo and Minor League phenom Clayton Kershaw, who still could be promoted later this month. The fifth starter spot comes up again on May 27 and then pretty much becomes necessary through the All-Star break.
Park isn't looking that far ahead. A career starter, he has adapted to the role of long reliever well, compiling a 2.16 ERA with a 1-0 record and his first career save. He has pitched three innings on four separate occasions.
"After one start, I hope I get another," he said. "I know that's my situation. I have nothing guaranteed the whole year."

Command, for one of the few times this season, was an issue for Santana, whose mid-90s fastball was crackling as usual. He's 2-2 in four career outings against the Dodgers with a 3.42 ERA. He was 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA last year against Los Angeles' other team.

MILWAUKEE -- The comeback of Chan Ho Park hits another milestone on Saturday when he gets the start for the Dodgers against the Angels in Anaheim.
The 34-year-old Park is the Dodgers' reclamation story of 2008. He was signed to a Minor League contract after pitching only four innings in the Major Leagues last year and being released by two organizations. He pitched well enough to make the club out of Spring Training in most seasons, but lost the fifth-starter competition to Esteban Loaiza, who had a guaranteed contract, and instead Park was sent to Triple-A for less than a week.
He was promoted to the Majors on April 3 and has adapted to long relief remarkably well for a career starter, compiling a 2.16 ERA with a 1-0 record and his first career save. He has pitched three innings on four separate occasions.
"We felt with his stuff and his feel, he could adjust to the bullpen," said manager Joe Torre. "It took him time, but he seems to have conquered the process."
Torre said Park was available to pitch one inning Wednesday night. Otherwise, he would throw his bullpen session during the late innings of the game.

Dodgers place Loaiza on DL
The Dodgers, who are off on Thursday, will replace Loaiza before Friday night's game with Houston. It most likely will be a pitcher and the leading candidate to be promoted is Triple-A right-hander Yhency Brazoban, who would be returning to the Major Leagues after missing most of last season with shoulder surgery.
Loaiza has a 1-2 record and a 5.62 ERA, having been given the ball three times as the fifth starter, most recently when he allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings at Coors Field.
Because of off-days this month, the Dodgers won't need a fifth starter until May 17. Loaiza, disabled retroactively to Sunday, won't be active at that point. Jason Schmidt, who could take over the fifth-starter job at some point, is nearing the start of an injury rehabilitation assignment, nearly 11 months after right shoulder surgery, but he won't be ready by May 17.
Another option would be 20-year-old phenom Clayton Kershaw, who has a 1.08 ERA at Double-A Jacksonville and who threw one inning in relief on Wednesday. The Dodgers are trying to ration Kershaw's innings so he will still be effective late in the season for a Major League callup.

LOS ANGELES -- An imbalance in the makeup of the Dodgers roster has manager Joe Torre and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt contemplating another change in the fifth-starter spot.
Esteban Loaiza had the role for one start, then was replaced by Hong-Chih Kuo for two starts, including Tuesday night's in Cincinnati, in which Kuo lasted 3 2/3 innings.
Even though Torre said on Tuesday night that he was anticipating keeping Kuo in the rotation, on Wednesday he indicated that Loaiza and Chan Ho Park were candidates to start on Sunday against Colorado. And not because of what Kuo did or didn't do on Tuesday night, but because of what he could do out of the bullpen.
With Loaiza, Kuo and Park, the Dodgers have three career starters who are not particularly comfortable or adept with the demands of relieving -- namely -- to warm up quickly and pitch frequently. With Takashi Saito as the closer and Jonathan Broxton as the setup man, the only true relievers available to Torre are Joe Beimel and Scott Proctor.
And with Dodgers starters averaging only 5 1/3 innings, as Honeycutt puts it, "We've got to have a more useable bullpen."
One option would be to increase the pitching staff from 11 to 12, but that would require reducing one position player. If it's Delwyn Young, he could be lost through waivers. Torre isn't comfortable removing rookie Blake DeWitt, because he's the only true third baseman on the bench. Starter Nomar Garciaparra needs time off and Torre isn't comfortable with Chin-lung Hu, a natural middle infielder, playing third.
"We have to go to 12, but we can't do that now because of Nomar, in my mind," said Torre. "It's a little tough right at this minute."
The third-base dilemma would have been solved if Tony Abreu's groin muscle had ever healed. After being examined by a Philadelphia specialist on Tuesday, he had an MRI in Los Angeles Wednesday and met with team doctor Neal ElAttrache and the club had yet to announce a timetable for his return.
Kuo is attractive in relief because has the kind of stuff that can put down an inning with a strikeout. Neither Park nor Loaiza are strikeout pitchers anymore.
But putting Kuo in the bullpen for frequent use is risky, because he's already had four operations on his elbow, two of them Tommy John reconstructions.
"But he's been bouncing back the day after he throws," said Honeycutt. "Unless something would change there, I think he's been healthier than in any of the years we've had him."
Of Kuo's 50 appearances, 26 have been out of the bullpen. Park has started 275 of 330 games, while Loaiza has started 331 of 372 games. Kuo has a 3.60 ERA this year, Park 3.27 and Loaiza 4.32.
When the Dodgers go to a 12th pitcher, which Torre said is inevitable, the leading candidate is Yhency Brazoban, who was dominant after opening the season at Double-A and has been promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Nomar back in Dodgers lineup
No time like now as third baseman returns from broken bone
LOS ANGELES -- There was no time like the present Wednesday afternoon as Nomar Garciaparra was awarded his first start of the season.
The plan had been to activate Garciaparra from the disabled list on Friday in Atlanta but manager Joe Torre said with a flu bug floating around the Triple-A club in Las Vegas and the fact his third baseman won't be any healthier two days from now, it was time to get the six-time All-Star into the lineup.
To make room on the 25-man roster, Ramon Troncoso was sent to Las Vegas.
"Coming in here we were going to do it Friday," Torre said. "There is a left-handed pitcher tonight; we might as well throw him out there."
Garciaparra, who hasn't played since a Spring Training game March 7 when he suffered a broken bone in his right hand, is eager to get back on the field and face Pirates starter Paul Maholm.
"You want to get out there but the good thing is I've done all that I'm supposed to and I haven't slacked off on anything so I didn't have to overcome that hurdle," Garciaparra said. "Once it was healed I was ready to go so that is a good thing."
Garciaparra split time between first and third last season, hitting .283 with seven homers and 59 RBIs in 121 games. He also spent time on the DL with a left-calf strain.
This spring, Garciaparra appeared in just seven games as the club not only lost him to injury but also Andy LaRoche (thumb surgery) and Tony Abreu (right groin). LaRoche is headed to extended Spring Training to begin working out but there is no schedule yet for Abreu's return.
Those injuries opened the door for Blake DeWitt to make the team and he won the job as the Dodgers' starting third baseman. DeWitt will take a seat on the bench as a reserve with Garciaparra in the lineup.
Troncoso, who allowed six runs over 5 2/3 innings in six appearances, is confident he'll make it back.
"I just have to keep the ball down," Troncoso said. "[Torre] said I did a good job getting the ground ball."

LOS ANGELES -- When the Dodgers leave for Atlanta on Thursday, joining them on the five-game road trip will be Nomar Garciaparra, who, according to Manager Joe Torre, will be activated in time for Friday's game.
"I spoke with him earlier and he's fine," Torre said on Tuesday. "He had a good day."
The plan is for Garciaparra to play in one more rehab assignment early Wednesday, then rejoin the club on Thursday for the trip east.
Monday night in Sacramento, Calif., Garciaparra went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk, while starting the game at third base.
For Garciaparra, it's been a much longer recovery than originally expected after suffering a fractured right hand when he was struck by a pitch on March 7 by Cardinals hurler Kyle McClellan. At that time, it was thought to be a day-to-day injury, but has since grown into a frustrating five weeks.
Torre said that he wasn't concerned that Garciaparra was hitless in seven at-bats up until last night, rather, it was a matter of how Garciaparra felt.
"The thing I look for is that he seems pretty comfortable," said Torre, adding, "The three hits certainly helps him in the timing part."
As for roster moves, the Dodgers are still weighing their options.
"There is a possibility that that we can go to 11 pitchers," Torre said.
With Esteban Loaiza and Chan Ho Park, the Dodgers have a couple of long-relief pitchers, which gives them some flexibility.
According to Torre, "It's something for the long haul we're not going to do, but there is a possibility that we can do it."
"We haven't settled in on one person yet," Torre explained. "We have to figure out what makes sense at this place and time."
Part of the decision-making process is based on how Garciaparra will respond to playing regularly.
"We'll have to see what we're doing and what Nomar can do physically," Torre said. "Does he play three and get one off? I don't know that. I think we'll have to figure that out."
The most important thing is to make sure that they don't do anything to make the injury flare up again.
"It's not like he's going to play till it hurts," Torre said. "I think we have to devise some kind of plan or routine that makes sense in keeping it from being a problem.
"There is a difference between playing hurt and playing stupid."

SAN DIEGO -- Chan Ho Park had choices.
He could have gone home, he could have pitched for the Korean National Team, he could have taste-tested some dishes at Pastagina, the Los Angeles restaurant chain he's invested in.
Instead, when the Dodgers told him there wasn't room for him on an 11-man Opening Day pitching staff, he believed them when he was told he'd be the first guy called up, and he actually accepted a Triple-A assignment with Las Vegas.
Park reported to the 51s but never pitched there, getting called up after Wednesday night's rain-soaked mess at Dodger Stadium, and he rejoined the Dodgers on Friday night at PETCO Park, where he pitched for the Padres from 2005-06.
"They said I'd be back soon, but I didn't think this soon," said Park.
The quick callup came after his impressive Spring Training (2.41 ERA), an indicator that his comeback has a legit chance. For now he's a long reliever, but he's been a career starter and would come in handy if fifth starter Esteban Loaiza falters or anybody else is injured.
"I'm happy to be back with the Dodgers," said Park, who debuted with the Dodgers in 1994, left in 2001 for a $60 million contract with Texas and has been mired with countless injuries ever since. "This was my first team. Most Korean fans know me as a Dodger."
Park didn't make the Opening Day roster because, with injuries to three third basemen and second baseman Jeff Kent, manager Joe Torre kept extra infielder Angel Chavez. But when pitching decisions and a rain delay resulted in having Friday night starter Hiroki Kuroda warming up to pitch extra innings, the 11-man staff experiment ended.
"We told Chan Ho when he went down that we needed the extra player and he would be the 12th pitcher when we needed one," said Torre. "He trusted us and now we kept our word. We didn't mean to keep it this quickly. The other night gives you the feeling we better protect ourself. We were going to 12 pitchers eventually."
Torre said that Kent's resilience after returning from a strained hamstring and rookie Blake DeWitt's steady play at third base left the club more comfortable with the infield situation.
"Even though it's only a couple games, [DeWitt] seems to be able to handle what's coming at him," Torre said.
On the injury front, Tony Abreu reported to extended Spring Training, Andy LaRoche reported improved flexibility with his healing thumb and Nomar Garciaparra is throwing with more freedom, but still is not able to swing a bat without pain.

Dodgers add Park to depleted 'pen

With the pitching staff already tired three games into the season, the Dodgers added a 12th pitcher and cleared space by designating infielder Angel Chavez for assignment. Park will give the Dodgers an innings-eating swingman capable of starting or relieving.
Park, 34, began his career with the Dodgers in 1994 and pitched in Los Angeles until leaving after the 2001 season to sign a $60 million contract with the Texas Rangers. Park has earned more than $80 million in his career, but he was willing to fight for a job this spring on a $500,000 Minor League contract because he believed he was finally healthy after several years battling injuries.
Esteban Loaiza and his guaranteed contract beat Park out for the fifth-starter spot, although Park's 2.41 ERA was more than two runs lower than Loaiza's 4.50 in Spring Training. Park was sent down over the weekend and was scheduled to pitch Opening Night for Las Vegas on Thursday.

Colletti leaves wiggle room to swing trade before opener

LOS ANGELES -- Buying time to continue searching for an infielder, the Dodgers submitted an Opening Day roster by Sunday's noon deadline that club officials acknowledged would likely change before Opening Day and, in fact, changed before Sunday was even done.
Injuries to third basemen Nomar Garciaparra, Andy LaRoche and Tony Abreu have left the club uncomfortable with rookie Blake DeWitt the likely starter when the season opens on Monday against the Giants. In addition, Jeff Kent's durability is questionable coming off a right hamstring injury.
Colletti said a trade in the next 24 hours was doubtful, but he wanted the wiggle room if one happened or if a third baseman good enough to start for the Dodgers was released. Philadelphia's Wes Helms (owed $2.9 million) is the most likely candidate.
If neither happens by Monday, Colletti said the club would scout available players over the next two weeks while watching how the 22-year-old DeWitt fares against Major League pitching. DeWitt has never played higher than Double-A.
"[A trade] is still viable, but as usual, what they are asking us to give up is a little strong because of the predicament we're in," said Colletti, who only wants a stop-gap solution until Garciaparra or LaRoche return in a matter of weeks. "We'll take time to see if the price comes down and see what those players look like in the next week to 10 days. Spring Training is tough to judge."
Before Sunday's game, Colletti placed Garciaparra, LaRoche and pitcher Jason Schmidt on the 15-day disabled list. Abreu is likely to join them on Monday. Reassigned to Minor League camp were non-roster pitchers Chan Ho Park, Brian Falkenborg, Mike Koplove, Clayton Kershaw and Greg Jones; catchers Rene Rivera and Danny Ardoin and infielder Ramon Martinez.
After Sunday's game vs. the Red Sox, the Dodgers optioned outfielder Jason Repko to Triple-A Las Vegas, essentially leaving their active roster at 24.
Repko said he was disappointed with the news, but felt he had proved he was healthy after missing the entire 2007 season with hamstring surgery.
"I did all I could do," he said. "The writing was on the wall. We've got too many outfielders. It's hard to know that you're good enough but there's no space."
The moves meant 25-year-old rookie reliever Ramon Troncoso beat out Park for the final spot on an 11-man pitching staff. Colletti and manager Joe Torre said Park would have made the club if it had kept 12 pitchers and that he would accept a Triple-A assignment so he's ready when the club needs a 12th pitcher, probably by mid-April.
They said Park accepted the assignment, however, he left Dodger Stadium during Sunday's game and made no comment.
The club submitted a roster that had six outfielders (now five without Repko) and six infielders, including Abreu. Technically, still in limbo are DeWitt and fellow non-roster utility infielder Angel Chavez, who beat out Martinez and could wind up as the seventh infielder if no acquisition is made.
Colletti said the 20-year-old Kershaw, who had as impressive a spring as any Dodger, would start the season at Double-A Jacksonville.

With Kim, Perez released, Bucs look to solidify rest of corps

BRADENTON, Fla. -- After a wave of roster moves and decisions on Wednesday, the Pirates' hazy bullpen picture moved a few steps closer to clarity.
Knowing that they had to essentially make a decision on Byung-Hyun Kim's future by Wednesday afternoon, the Pirates gave him word that they would trigger the release clause in his contract and unconditionally release the 29-year-old right-hander.
The Pirates also gave lefty Juan Perez his unconditional release and reassigned veteran righty Jaret Wright to Minor League camp. And, in another move to solidify their bullpen, the Pirates acquired Tyler Yates from the Braves for Minor League pitcher Todd Redmond.
After Wednesday's game, the Pirates released Hector Carrasco and Masumi Kuwata announced his retirement, further dwindling the number of relievers competing to make the club.
Kim's one-month tenure with the club was arguably the biggest disappointment in what has turned out to be an impressive spring for a number of the relief pitchers lobbying for the final bullpen spots.
When the Pirates signed Kim to an $850,000 contract back on Feb. 24, the hope was that the righty would be able to bring another dimension to the bullpen with his unique arm angle and years of experience.
At the time, general manager Neal Huntington reiterated that Kim would still have to earn a spot on the team. And Kim did anything but that this spring.
Kim arrived in camp behind in his throwing program, and he wasn't able to make his first appearance until March 10. He struggled from the outset.
In his first four innings of work, Kim allowed eight runs. He rebounded to pitch a scoreless inning of relief on Sunday, but by then, he had fallen behind the rest of the pack.
"It was tough, because we knew he had a late start getting going," Huntington said. "He just didn't pitch well. His last outing was his best outing, but we're in a situation where we've had some young guys have some good springs."
By releasing Kim before 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the team will owe him just $300,000 of his contract.
"We thought he could come in here and compete to make our club, but in that competition, he was outpitched by some other guys," Huntington said. "And the addition of Tyler Yates made it that much easier of a decision. Obviously, it's a financial hit, but we're trying to take the right 12 [pitchers] north."
As for Wright, the decision to remain with the organization is his. He has an escape clause in his contract that, if triggered, will allow him to become a free agent. If he opts not to exercise it, Wright can accept a spot at Triple-A Indianapolis to start the season.
The Pirates' decision to hand Perez his unconditional release was driven by the organization's need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Yates. At the outset of Spring Training, Perez was not among the top group of contenders for one of the final bullpen spots. He then tore a ligament in his left elbow on March 7.
Since the club was unsure of how long Perez's recovery would take, Huntington said that the Pirates decided to take a tougher business approach and release Perez now rather than put him on the 60-day disabled list.
Huntington strongly suggested that Franquelis Osoria, who is out of options on his contract, will join Yates as two of the final four relievers on the Opening Day roster. That leaves three pitchers -- Evan Meek, Sean Burnett and Phil Dumatrait -- left in camp vying for the final two spots.
Burnett has had the most dominant spring of the five, but he could be the odd man out if the Pirates take Dumatrait and decide against having four lefties in the 'pen. Left-handers John Grabow and Damaso Marte are already locks. Burnett has not given up a hit in his last eight appearances.
Dumatrait would seem to have an upper hand at one of the two spots, considering the Pirates have stretched his appearances out this spring to build him up for use as a potential long reliever. He is also out of options and would likely have been lost on waivers if the Pirates had designated him for assignment.
The decision concerning Meek could be the most difficult. The hard-throwing right-hander has shown to have a power arm this spring, and since the team acquired him in December via the Rule 5 Draft, he must remain on the Pirates' 25-man roster the entire season or else be offered back to the Rays for $25,000.
The question now simply becomes whether Meek, who has never thrown above the Double-A level, is ready for the big leagues.
Meek had one final tryout so to speak when he pitched two innings in Wednesday's game. Though erratic with his control at times -- the right-hander issued three walks in those two frames -- he limited Detroit to just one run.
"He did really good damage control," manager John Russell said. "It's one of the things you have to learn how to do. Hopefully he's not in that situation very often, but pitching his way out of it was a good learning experience."
The final decision on those last two bullpen spots is likely to come on Thursday.
