He speculated that Kuroda might return to the Dodgers' rotation early next week, but implied that Penny might need a Minor League rehabilitation start. In debut, Kershaw pitches six effective innings in Dodgers' extra-inning win

LOS ANGELES -- Andre Ethier singled home the winning run in the 10th inning, and Luis Maza hit his first big league homer, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.
Russell Martin drove in two runs and touted prospect Clayton Kershaw pitched six effective innings for the Dodgers in his major league debut.
Terry Tiffee, recalled Saturday from Triple-A, pinch-hit for Los Angeles closer Takashi Saito (3-1) and led off the 10th with a bloop single against Mike Parisi (0-1). The right-hander then turned Juan Pierre's comebacker into a force play, but Pierre advanced on a wild pitch and Ethier lined Parisi's 3-2 delivery down the right-field line with two outs.
Saito struck out Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols and Ryan Ludwick in succession in the top of the 10th and finished his two-inning stint with five Ks.
Kershaw allowed two runs and five hits, striking out seven and walking one. The left-hander threw 69 of his 102 pitches for strikes, recording his first three outs on punchouts.
Kershaw was the seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft out of Highland Park High School in Dallas. He was promoted from Double-A Jacksonville to take the fifth spot in the rotation for at least three turns.
The original plan was for him to pitch Tuesday, but manager Joe Torre and pitching coach Rick Honeycutt decided instead to give Chad Billingsley and Hiroki Kuroda an extra day of rest because they both pitched deep into the game their last time out.
Kershaw, who turned 20 on March 19, got a chance to pitch at Dodger Stadium in the team's final exhibition game against the World Series champion Boston Red Sox and tossed four scoreless innings of relief with six strikeouts. During spring training, he gave up one run over 14 innings and struck out 19.
St. Louis starter Todd Wellemeyer gave up three runs and five hits over six innings with four strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander was removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh, when the Cardinals tied it 3-all on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Miles, who was batting for Brendan Ryan.
The Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Ethier scored from first base on Martin's double off the center-field fence.
Brian Barton scored the tying run for St. Louis in the sixth, when third baseman Blake DeWitt charged Ludwick's slow bouncer and made a high throw to the plate that Martin had to reach for as Barton slid across. Barton reached on a pop-fly single that first baseman James Loney lost in the sun near the foul line.
But Martin put the Dodgers back in front 3-2 in the bottom half with a two-out RBI single after Pierre led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second by Maza. The hit ended the Dodgers' 0-for-26 drought with runners in scoring position.
After striking out his first batter, Skip Schumaker, Kershaw asked that the ball taken out of play for a keepsake as the crowd of 46,566 gave the rookie a warm round of applause. But he walked his next hitter, Barton, on four pitches and Pujols followed with an RBI double. Kershaw then came back to strike out Ludwick and caught Troy Glaus looking at a third strike to end his 32-pitch inning.
Maza, starting at second base with Jeff Kent getting the day off, got the run back in the bottom half when he drove a 1-1 pitch over the left-field fence. Wellemeyer had not allowed a home run in his previous five starts, spanning 30 innings.
Glaus was back in the Cardinals' lineup after a brief bout with stomach pains, which forced manager Tony La Russa to send up a pinch-hitter for him in the ninth inning of Saturday night's 4-0 victory and resulted in a brief visit to the hospital for the four-time All-Star third baseman. Glaus was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Kershaw was 0-3 with a 2.28 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 43 1-3 innings with Jacksonville. ... Ryan was in the starting lineup for the first time at Dodger Stadium as a major leaguer. He played 2B at Chavez Ravine eight years ago, when Notre Dame High School lost the California state championship game to San Luis Obispo High on Graduation Day. Everyone on the team wore their caps and gowns over their baseball uniforms for the commencement before taking a chartered bus to the ballpark.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers' youth movement hit another milestone Saturday when 20-year-old left-hander Clayton Kershaw was promoted to the Major Leagues from Double-A Jacksonville.
Kershaw is expected to make his debut in a Sunday start against the St. Louis Cardinals. To make room for Kershaw on the 40-man Major League roster, the Dodgers activated Esteban Loaiza from the disabled list and designated him for assignment. To make room for Kershaw on the 25-man active roster, reliever Yhency Brazoban was optioned back to Triple-A Las Vegas.
By starting Kershaw on Sunday, Chad Billingsley, who has back-to-back seven-inning starts, and Hiroki Kuroda, who pitched eight innings in his last start, will gain an extra day of rest. The Dodgers' fifth-starter spot actually comes up Tuesday, but the club thought it best that Kershaw debut at home rather than at Wrigley Field.
Kershaw was 0-3 with a 2.28 ERA, 47 strikeouts, 15 walks and 32 hits allowed in 43 1/3 innings at Double-A Jacksonville, where his erratic workload was designed to preserve his arm for a pennant-race run in Los Angeles. Such unconventional treatment is indicative of how special the Dodgers consider their 2006 first-round Draft pick.
Kershaw jumped onto the Major League radar during a stunning Spring Training this year. Brought over from Minor League camp March 9, Kershaw allowed a home run to the first batter he faced in an exhibition game, and didn't allow another run in 14 innings, striking out 19 with three walks.
Management sent Kershaw back to Double-A Jacksonville anyway, with a mandate that he pitch no more than 25 innings a month to ration his arm for a possible pennant-stretch role in Los Angeles. He has pitched only 11 innings since May 2, including a one-inning start on Thursday.
Removing Loaiza from the picture effectively ends his brief and unhappy stint as a Dodger. He was claimed off waivers last Aug. 29 from Oakland, having made only two starts after being disabled for four months following operations on his back and right knee.
By doing so, the Dodgers assumed the remaining $1.2 million of his 2007 salary, a $6.5 million salary for 2008 and a $375,000 buyout of his 2008 salary of $7.5 million. For that, the Dodgers got one win last year and one win this year. Technically, the club has 10 days to move him, but it most likely will eat the remaining obligation and grant him his release. He had been disabled with stiffness in the shoulder blade and made one rehab appearance, but his velocity still hasn't returned from 2006.
Brazoban made only two appearances after being recalled May 9 to replace Loaiza, allowing two runs in three innings. He is on the rebound from shoulder and elbow operations the previous two seasons.

ANAHEIM -- The fifth-starter spot is no afterthought to the Dodgers.
It came up on Saturday, when Chan Ho Park and Hong-Chih Kuo combined for eight solid innings in the heat to beat the Angels.
Manager Joe Torre indicated the club could do worse than employ the same pair the next time the spot comes up in two weeks.
"Not too bad," Torre said. "Both know what they're doing. It was pretty comfortable to watch yesterday."
The Dodgers this year are 4-3 in games started by the fifth starter. In 2007, Los Angeles was 29-40 in games started by someone other than Brad Penny, Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley and Randy Wolf, who's now with the Padres.
Management is hopeful that Jason Schmidt will eventually take over the spot, and he moved a big step closer on Sunday, reporting no ill effects from his 34-pitch injury rehab start for Class A Inland Empire on Saturday night. Schmidt had surgery on his right shoulder on June 20 of last year.
The tentative plan is for Schmidt to throw one or two bullpen sessions at Dodger Stadium before another Inland Empire appearance, probably next weekend.
Schmidt said he again stuck with fastballs and changeups, because he's still not satisfied with the command of his breaking ball.
Schmidt's velocity increased to 88-90 mph Saturday night after residing at 86-88 mph in his earlier rehab start.
Esteban Loaiza, something of a forgotten man in the equation, will make an Inland Empire rehab start Monday night. He's been on the disabled list for two weeks with tightness in his shoulder blade. Loaiza and Kuo have made three starts each in the fifth spot.
Clayton Kershaw -- the 20-year-old phenom whose schedule at Double-A Jacksonville has been juggled so it matches when the Dodgers need a fifth starter -- had an eventful start Saturday. He had three walks and a balk in the first inning, cruised through the next four innings, then retired one batter in the sixth before being removed. He was charged with two earned runs, but walked a season-high four.

ANAHEIM -- Chan Ho Park has seen the heights of the Major Leagues, and the depths, so he knows exactly the significance of his spot start Saturday against the Angels.
"It's just one start," said the 34-year-old right-hander. "I know it's not set for my job. It's a test for me and I'll try to pitch the way I've been pitching."

Park isn't looking that far ahead. A career starter, he has adapted to the role of long reliever well, compiling a 2.16 ERA with a 1-0 record and his first career save. He has pitched three innings on four separate occasions.
"After one start, I hope I get another," he said. "I know that's my situation. I have nothing guaranteed the whole year."

This will be his first start for the Dodgers since 2001 and his first Major League start since April 30, 2007 when he allowed seven runs in four innings for the Mets.
LAA: RHP Ervin Santana (6-0, 2.63 ERA)
He wasn't as razor-sharp as in recent outings on Sunday in Tampa Bay, but Santana left the game with a lead the bullpen was unable to hold. He needed 113 pitches -- 33 in the first inning alone -- to reach 5 2/3 innings, yielding four runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out seven. Command, for one of the few times this season, was an issue for Santana, whose mid-90s fastball was crackling as usual. He's 2-2 in four career outings against the Dodgers with a 3.42 ERA. He was 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA last year against Los Angeles' other team.

Disabled pitcher Jason Schmidt is scheduled to make his second Minor League rehabilitation start Saturday for Inland Empire against Lake Elsinore. Schmidt is penciled in for two or three innings, depending on a pitch count ranging from 30-45 ... James Loney had two hits, extending his hitting streak to nine games ... The Dodgers will continue their 50th anniversary celebration by highlighting a different decade of Dodgers baseball each month this season and next week's homestand features heroes from the 1960s, Hall of Famer Don Sutton and 1965 Rookie of the Year Jim Lefebvre, taking part in the pregame ceremonies.

MILWAUKEE -- The comeback of Chan Ho Park hits another milestone on Saturday when he gets the start for the Dodgers against the Angels in Anaheim.
The 34-year-old Park is the Dodgers' reclamation story of 2008. He was signed to a Minor League contract after pitching only four innings in the Major Leagues last year and being released by two organizations. He pitched well enough to make the club out of Spring Training in most seasons, but lost the fifth-starter competition to Esteban Loaiza, who had a guaranteed contract, and instead Park was sent to Triple-A for less than a week.
He was promoted to the Majors on April 3 and has adapted to long relief remarkably well for a career starter, compiling a 2.16 ERA with a 1-0 record and his first career save. He has pitched three innings on four separate occasions.
"We felt with his stuff and his feel, he could adjust to the bullpen," said manager Joe Torre. "It took him time, but he seems to have conquered the process."
Torre said Park was available to pitch one inning Wednesday night. Otherwise, he would throw his bullpen session during the late innings of the game.

Cory Wade has a 1.86 ERA in middle and long relief duty. Yhency Brazoban was called up to replace Loaiza, but he has pitched only one inning, in an appearance on May 9.

Dodgers place Loaiza on DL
The Dodgers, who are off on Thursday, will replace Loaiza before Friday night's game with Houston. It most likely will be a pitcher and the leading candidate to be promoted is Triple-A right-hander Yhency Brazoban, who would be returning to the Major Leagues after missing most of last season with shoulder surgery.
Loaiza has a 1-2 record and a 5.62 ERA, having been given the ball three times as the fifth starter, most recently when he allowed five runs in 2 1/3 innings at Coors Field.
Because of off-days this month, the Dodgers won't need a fifth starter until May 17. Loaiza, disabled retroactively to Sunday, won't be active at that point. Jason Schmidt, who could take over the fifth-starter job at some point, is nearing the start of an injury rehabilitation assignment, nearly 11 months after right shoulder surgery, but he won't be ready by May 17.
Another option would be 20-year-old phenom Clayton Kershaw, who has a 1.08 ERA at Double-A Jacksonville and who threw one inning in relief on Wednesday. The Dodgers are trying to ration Kershaw's innings so he will still be effective late in the season for a Major League callup.
