Manuel likes what he's seen from veteran right-hander

필리스 박찬호는 지난 시즌 불펜투수로 부활했지만 그는 불펜이 편하다고 느끼지 않는다.

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies righty Chan Ho Park may have resurrected his career last season in middle relief, but that doesn't mean he feels at ease in the bullpen.

Indeed, one week after being removed from the Phils' rotation, Park said he is "not yet" comfortable in his new role. Manager Charlie Manuel, however, likes what he has seen from the veteran hurler.

"The two times he's been out, he did pretty good," Manuel said. "I think he's going to get used to it. His stuff will play up more, like I said, for one to three innings than it does to try to get five to six, or seven, out of him."

Park tossed three innings in Monday night's 5-3 loss to the Marlins. He allowed one run on four hits, lowering his season ERA to 6.57, and matched a season high with five strikeouts. His first relief outing since leaving the rotation came in Cincinnati on Thursday, when he pitched a scoreless eighth in Philadelphia's 12-5 victory.

박찬호는 구원 등판한 4이닝 동안 안타 4개로 1실점을 했다. 삼진은 6개를 잡고, 볼넷은 3개를 허용했다. 피안타율은 .250을 기록했다. 반면 선발등판에서는 피안타율 .311을 기록했었다.

Park has given up one run on four hits in those four innings, fanning six and walking three. Opponents hit .250 against him, compared to .311 as a starter.

박찬호는 28살이었던 2001년 올스타에 선정되었고 다저스에서 75승 49패 방어율 3.59로 성공적인 다섯 시즌을 보냈다. 그러나 지난 시즌 다저스로 돌아와 불펜 투수로 활약하며 방어율 3.40을 기록하기 전까지 7년 동안 3팀을 돌면서 난조를 보였었다.

The South Korea native was an All-Star as a 28-year-old starter in 2001, capping off a five-year stretch with the Dodgers in which he went 75-49 with a 3.59 ERA. But he struggled mightily with three teams over the next seven seasons before returning to Los Angeles in '08, posting a 3.40 ERA out of the bullpen.

다행히도 박찬호는 체인지업을 덜 사용하고 대신 포심 패스트볼이나 싱커에 의존할 수 있다고 박찬호는 말했다. 게다가 불펜투수로 투구를 준비하면서 더 큰 변화를 주고 있어 왔다. 

In relief, Park said, he can use fewer changeups, relying instead on four-seam fastballs and sinkers. Yet the bigger adjustment has been getting ready to pitch on short notice.

"I had a hard time warming up quickly," Park said. But with each additional inning thrown on Monday, "it got better."

매뉴얼 감독은 박찬호를 7회 또는 8회에도 활용할 것이고 필요하다면 오른손 타자를 상대할 때에도 등판시킬 것이라고 말했다. 매뉴얼 감독은 멀티 이닝을 소화할 수 있는 박찬호, 채드 더빈, 클레이 컨드리를 보유 했다는 점에 만족해 하고 불펜을 건강하게 유지하기 위해 이들 세명을 활용할 것이다.

Manuel said that he could conceivably use Park in the seventh or even in the eighth, if necessary, against certain right-handed batters. But he likes having three relievers -- Park, Chad Durbin and Clay Condrey -- who can throw multiple innings, and plans to rotate them in the middle frames to keep the bullpen fresh.

아직 박찬호가 새로운 환경에 적응하는 중이지만 박찬호는 그 역할을 감당할 수 있다.

Even if Park is still getting acclimated to his new surroundings, he is up to the task.

"문제가 되지 않는다." "선발이든 불펜이든 더 좋은 투구를 해야한다."라고 박찬호는 말했다.

"It doesn't matter," he said. "Starter, bullpen, I have to make better pitches."
