CLEARWATER, Fla. - Although Chan Ho Park's goal to win the fifth spot in the Phillies' starting rotation was motivated by patriotism, J.A. Happ said yesterday that his own desire for the job was equally strong.

"Regardless of what anybody says or what's been written about, there's no one who wanted this job more or worked harder," the 26-year-old Happ said after his team awarded the spot to Park yesterday afternoon and also declined to guarantee Happ a position in the major-league bullpen. Park is scheduled to debut for the Phillies on April 12, in Colorado.

In February, pitching coach Rich Dubee said that of the initial candidates - Park, Happ, Kyle Kendrick and Carlos Carrasco - Kendrick was the front-runner because of his 21 major-league wins.

But Kendrick, 24, struggled to develop a change-up and contain his emotions while pitching, which led to a minor-league demotion last week. Carrasco, 22, did not pitch aggressively enough for Dubee or manager Charlie Manuel, and was sent to triple A on Tuesday.

Of the two remaining pitchers, Park's Grapefruit League ERA of 2.53 was superior to Happ's 3.15. On Saturday, pitching in front of several top team officials, Happ allowed five runs in 51/3 innings during a minor-league game in Dunedin, Fla.

The righthander wanted to start rather than relieve with the Phillies, to provide scheduled entertainment every fifth day for his countrymen, who are suffering from a severe economic downturn.

"아마도 한국 팬들은 매우 만족해하고 5선발 결정에 흥분할 것이다."라고 박찬호는 말했다.

"Probably they are very happy and excited about it," Park said yesterday.
