약 7주간 박찬호와 햅은 매 경기, 투구 한개 한개에 경쟁을 했다. 그들은 선발 자리에 둘이 동시에 들어갈 자리가 없다는 것을 알고 있었다.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- For almost seven weeks, they competed -- pitch-for-pitch, start-for-start -- for a spot in the Phillies' starting rotation, knowing all along there wasn't enough room for both.

비교적 조용히 진행되었던 스프링캠프의 가장 어려운 결정이 내려진 이후 박찬호와 햅은 화요일 수비 연습을 위해 3루 베이스라인 선상에 나란히 섰다. 그들의 마음은 아주 다른 곳에 가 있었다.

So, after the most difficult decision of a relatively quiet spring finally had been rendered, Chan Ho Park and J.A. Happ stood side-by-side on the third-base line for fielding drills Tuesday, their minds in vastly different places.

박찬호는 이미 4/12일 콜로라도와 시즌 첫 경기를 생각하고 있었다.

Park already was thinking about his first start, April 12 at Colorado.

햅은 다음이 어떻게 될지 걱정하고 있었다.

Happ was wondering what's next.

매뉴얼 감독과 더비 투수코치는 별도 미팅을 갖은 후 박찬호를 필리스 5선발로 결정하였다. 햅은 팀이 불펜의 남은 두자리 중 한자리를 만들어 주는데 희망을 걸어야 할 것이다.

In separate meetings with manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee, they were told that Park, a 35-year-old veteran right-hander from Korea, will open the season as the Phillies' No. 5 starter. Happ, a 26-year-old lefty from northern Illinois, will now have to pin his hopes of making the team to winning one of two available bullpen jobs.

이 결정이 박찬호에게는 선발 투수가 되고자 하는 열망을 완성하는 것이었다. 그는 선발 투수가 되기 위해 WBC에 한국 대표로 참가하는 것을 포기하였고 필리스의 스프링 캠프에 남았었다.

For Park, it was the fulfillment of a burning desire to be a starter again, a yearning so strong that he declined to pitch for Korea in the World Baseball Classic to remain in camp with the Phillies.

그러나 월드시리즈 멤버로서 다음주 수요일 월드시리즈 챔피언 반지를 받게 되는 햅에게는 이 결정이 씁쓸한 실망이었다.

But for Happ, a member of the Phillies' World Series roster who will receive his ring next Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park, it was a bitter disappointment.

"선발이 쉽지 않을 것으로 안다." "그러나 선발로 뛰어 보았기 때문에 괜찮다. 도전할 수 있는 기회가 생겨서 만족한다." 라고 박찬호는 말했다. 박찬호는 2006년 이후 선발로 등판한 적이 없다. 

"I know it's not going to be easy," said Park, who hasn't been a starter since 2006. "But it's good because I earned it. I made the rotation. I'm happy I have an opportunity to be challenged."

"어느 누가 무엇을 말하던, 어떻게 기록되었건 간에 선발 자리를 더 원했고 선발 자리를 얻기 위해 더 열심히 노력했던 사람은 없을 것이다. 이렇게 말하는 것에 대해 아주 확신한다. 선발 자리를 얻기 위해 최선을 다했다. 그것은 나의 목표였다. 좋은 스프링 캠프를 보냈다고 생각했었다." 라고 햅은 말했다. 

Said Happ, "Regardless of what anyone has said, or what's been written about, there's no one who wanted this job more or worked harder to get it. I'm very confident saying that. I busted my butt to try to get it. That was the goal. I thought I had a good spring."

필리스 구단은 (이러한 햅의 생각에) 동의했다. 햅은 스프링 캠프에서 20이닝을 소화하며 안타 18개를 허용하였고 볼넷은 6개를 내주었다. 삼진은 14개를 잡았고 방어율 3.15를 기록했다. 보통의 경우라면 그 정도 성적이면 충분했다. 그러나 박찬호가 21과 1/3이닝 동안 방어율 2.53과 놀라울 정도의 삼진 대 볼넷 (25 대 2) 비율을 기록했다.

The Phillies agreed. Happ allowed 18 hits and six walks, struck out 14 and posted a 3.15 ERA in 20 Grapefruit League innings. And ordinarily, that would have been enough. But Park notched a 2.53 ERA and a stellar strikeout-to-walk ratio of 25-to-2 in 21 1/3 innings.

박찬호는 월요일 시범경기 마지막 등판을 마치고 그가 5선발 경쟁에서 이길 자신이 있었기에 필리스와 계약했다고 말했다. 루벤 아마로 단장은 구단이 박찬호가 불펜으로 보내졌을 때 그가 어떤 반응이 나올지 염려되었기 때문에 박찬호를 선택한 것이 아니다 라고 말했다. (결국 염려하지 않았다는 말로 보인다.)

And after his final Grapefruit League start Monday, Park said he signed a $2.5 million contract with the Phillies in January because he expected to win the No. 5 starter job. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the Phillies didn't choose Park because they were concerned about how he would react to being moved to the bullpen.
