Young right-hander struggled in bid to regain fifth starter's role

The Phillies had optioned Kendrick, who pitching coach Rich Dubee had proclaimed the favorite to win the fifth starter's job before Spring Training began last month, to Minor League camp.

The move left left-hander J.A. Happ and right-hander Chan Ho Park dueling for the job. Right-hander Carlos Carrasco, who entered the spring in the competition, remains in camp, but is expected to open the season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The Phillies said Monday they have not even discussed who their No. 5 starter might be. "We've got plenty of time for that," pitching coach Rich Dubee said.

그렇지만 실제로 4월5일 시즌 오픈까지 2주도 남지 않은 상태이고, 필리스 구단이 언급하고 있지는 않지만 5선발이 햅이나 박찬호 둘 중 하나가 될 것이라는 것은 모두 알고 있다.

They actually have less than two weeks before Opening Night on April 5, but while the Phillies said they have not talked about it, we know this much: it will be left-hander J.A. Happ or right-hander Chan Ho Park.

햅은 23일 양키스와 경기에서 5이닝 동안 안타 5개, 볼넷 3개를 허용하고 2실점(1자책점)을 기록했다. 햅은 시범 경기 6번 등판하여 승패 없이 방어율 3.15를 기록하고 있다. 반면 박찬호는 3번 선발 등판하여 1승 무패 방어율 1.54를 기록하고 있다. 박찬호는 화요일 블루 제이스 경기에 등판한다.

Happ allowed five hits, two runs (one earned) and three walks in five innings in an 8-3 victory over the Yankees at Bright House Field. He is 0-0 with a 3.15 ERA in six Grapefruit League appearances. Park, who is 1-0 with a 1.54 ERA in three starts, starts Tuesday afternoon against the Blue Jays in Dunedin, Fla.

"아직 오픈되어 있다."라고 더비 투수코치가 2인 경쟁에 대해 언급했다.

"It's open, yeah," Dubee said of the two-man competition.

Happ will get two more starts to make his case. But he continues to impress, even without his best stuff. Dubee said Happ wasn't at the top of his game against the Yankees, but he liked how he "hung in there."

"긍정적인 면은 두 세차례 위기에서 벗어났다는 것이다." "주자가 누상에 있을 때 몇 번 좋은 투구를 했다."라고 햅이 말했다.

"The positives I take definitely are getting out of a couple jams," Happ said. "I feel like I made some good pitches with guys on base."

Philadelphia has a few choices on Happ: make him the fifth starter, put him in the bullpen as the second left-hander or have him start in Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The Phillies optioned right-hander Kyle Kendrick to Minor League camp on Monday because they no longer considered him a candidate for the rotation or an option for the bullpen.

햅은 불펜으로 갈 수도 있다. 이렇게 되면 박찬호가 햅을 경쟁에서 이겨야 한다.

Happ could be a bullpen candidate should Park beat him out.

"상황에 따라 다르다." "햅은 메이저 리그에서 불펜 경험을 몇번 했다. 이 점은 고려해 봐야 할 사항이다."라고 더비 투수코치가 말했다.

"It depends," Dubee said. "J.A. has done it before a little bit in the Major Leagues. It could be a situation we look at."

The Phillies might be better suited having Happ in the rotation and Park in the bullpen, but Park might be hard to push out if he continues to pitch well. Then again, two more quality starts from Happ might be enough.

"분명 아직 끝난것은 아니다."라고 햅이 말했다.

"It's definitely not over," Happ said.
