Rule #1 투자를 얼마로 시작해야 하는가? 천달러면 되는가?

Rule #1 투자를 시작하는 정확한 금액은 "0"이다. 

첫날부터 자전거를 타고 급경사 언덕을 내려가서는 않된다. 안 그런가? 그렇게 하면 다칠 것이다. 당신이 해야 할 것이 무언지 모르는데 힘들게 번 돈을 투자할 수 있는가? 처음에는 보조바퀴를 단채 시작해야 한다. 잠시 동안은 진짜 돈을 사용하는 것처럼 가상으로 투자하고, 당신이 모든 결정을 스스로 내릴 때 어떤 일이 발생하는지 지켜 보아라. 

그 다음에 열번 정도 올바른 결정을 내렸다면 진짜 돈 천달러을 가지고 시작할 수 있다. 천달러로 한 종목을 사되 Rule #1을 명심해라. 천달러면 단지 한 종목을 살 수 있다. 집중을 유지해라. 만일 10만달러를 갖고 있다면 아마도 5종목을 살 수 있다. 그러는 동안 David Bach가 쓴 Automatic Millionaire, Bill Danko가 쓴 The Millionaire Next Door, 그리고 Suze Orman가 쓴 책 중 아무거나 한권을 읽어라. 그리고 적은 돈을 저축해 놓을 수 있는 장소를 찾아라.

How much is enough to get started investing with? Is $1000 okay?

The right amount to start with is $0. You wouldn't ride a bike down a steep hill your first day, would you? That could hurt. So can investing your own hard-earned money when you don't know what you are doing. First you have to get started with training wheels. You do it as if you are using real money for awhile and see what happens when you are making all your own decisions. Then, once you've gotten it right 10 times, you can start with $1000 for real. With $1000 you buy one stock and remember Rule #1. With $10,000 you still buy one stock. Keep it focused. If you have $100,000 you own maybe 5 stocks. Meanwhile, read Automatic Millionaire by David Bach and The Millionaire Next Door by Bill Danko and anything by Suze Orman and find places in your life to save a little money. About a year from now you'll be one of the best investors on the planet AND you'll have money to invest.

어떻게 하면 투자한 돈을 주식시장에서 운영할 수가 있는가? 브로커가 필요한가?

브로커가 필요하다. 그렇지만 거래당 많은 돈을 지불할 필요는 없다. 5달러에서 11달러가 지불해야 하는 최대 금액이다. "online brokerage"라고 검색하면, 주식 거래 중계 웹사이트 리스트를 볼 수 있다. 내가 시작했을 때는 Scottrade가 리스트의 가장 첫머리에 나왔다. Scottrade는 좋은 회사다. 수수료는 7불이다. Ameritrade도 역시 좋은 회사이다. 수수료는 11불이다. 

리스트에 나와 있는 사이트 중 하나를 고르고 무료 통화 번호로 전화하면, 괜찮은 직원이 계정 오픈하는 것을 도와 줄 것이다. 은행에서 계정를 오픈하는 것과 같다. 증권 계정에 천달러를 넣으면 본격적으로 투자할 준비가 된 것이다. 트레이딩 버튼을 누르고, 사고자 하는 종목 번호와 주문 수량 입력하고 주문 버튼을 누른다. 그리고 확인 후 매수를 클릭한다.  

브로커는 즉시 가장 최적 가격에 주식을 사고 당신 계정에서 돈을 인출해 나갈 것이다. 주식을 팔때는 브로커가 이와 반대로 한다. 즉 매매한 돈을 당신의 계좌에 입금한다. 간단하다.

How does investing money in the market actually work? Do I need a broker?

You need a broker but you don't need to pay a lot per trade. Somewhere between $5 and $11 is the most you should pay. Google "online brokerage". You'll get a list of websites. Scottrade was the first on the list when I did just now. Good company. $7 per trade. Ameritrade is good, too. $11. Pick one, call the toll free number and a nice person will guide you through opening an account. It's just like opening a checking account. You put a $1000 in an account and you're ready to go. You click on the trading button, put in the symbol of the company you want to own, the number of shares, click market order and review and then, if it looks right, click buy. The broker will immediately buy the stock at the best price and take the money from your account. When you sell the stock, they reverse it and put the money back in your account. Simple.

투자 활동에 시간은 얼마나 필요하나?

일주일에 약 15분 정도면 된다. 어떤 주는 투자 정보를 검색하느라 몇 시간 걸린다. 어떤 주는 투자할 돈이 없는 경우 하루에 1분도 소비하지 않는다. 

시간을 짧게 소비할 수 있는 것은 내가 관심이 있는 회사들이 적힌 다소 짧은 목록이 있고, 투자 관련된 일들을 대신 해주는 툴이 있기 때문이다. 내 목록에 있는 회사 중 하나가 비니지스에 많은 돈을 투입하기 시작하면 그때가 내가 행동을 취할 시기이다. 그렇지 않는 경우는 할 수 있는 것이 없다.

Jim Cramer는 이런 점에서 나와 다르다. 그는 주당 회사당 1시간을 소비하고 최소 5종목을 갖으라고 한다. 그러면 주당 5시간이 된다. Jim은 이런 방식으로 돈을 번다. 나는 내 투자 방식대로 하고 있어 돈을 잃지 않고 있고 시간이 덜 든다. 나는 그렇게 생각한다.

How much time does it take to invest your own money?

It takes me about 15 minutes a week or so. Some weeks several hours while I'm playing around doing searches. Some weeks when I don't have any money in the market, I spend less than a minute a day. What makes it so quick is having a fairly short list of businesses that I am interested in owning and having good tools that do most of the work. If one of the businesses on my list starts getting a lot of institutional money into it, it's time for me to take action. Otherwise there isn't anything to do. Jim Cramer differs with me on this. He thinks it takes about an hour per company per week and you need 5 companies minimum. That's five hours a week. But then Jim is doing this to make money. I'm doing it so I don't lose any and that takes a lot less time, I guess.
