A Southern California van ride and a weekend of Korean food began the process, and months of quality relief pitching sealed it. Chan Ho Park did not want to be a member of the Phillies' bullpen, but he is finishing the season as one of its key contributors - and enjoying it.

Manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee always maintained that the 36-year-old righthander's repertoire was more suited to the bullpen at this stage of his career, and the evidence has proved them correct. In seven starts in April and May, Park posted a 7.27 earned run average and was sent to the bullpen in favor of J.A. Happ. Since then, Park's numbers have been increasingly impressive, making him an essential component of a bullpen hobbled by injuries.

The primary differences have been aggressiveness and stamina, according to Park and his fellow relievers. From the bullpen, Park has been more inclined to throw strikes and challenge hitters, without needing to conserve energy for later in the game. Park said that as a starter, he had tried to be too fine with his pitches, to "do too much" in an effort to impress. Now that he is responsible for just a few innings, Park said, he feels more comfortable just lettin' it rip.

He also said he was much more comfortable in the social environment of the Phils' bullpen. The relievers are an especially tight group, and all the rest are Americans. That dynamic had been a barrier on other teams for Park, who became the first Korean to ever play in the major leagues when he debuted with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994. Pitching for four clubs before arriving in Philadelphia, Park sometimes felt isolated from his teammates. He speaks English, stopping occasionally to search for the appropriate word, but said he had yet to find a group as accepting as the men in the Phils' bullpen. Still, though, it took time to feel comfortable.

In the series, the quality time offered by the ride was presented as a turning point for Park, when he finally opened up to new colleagues and began to enjoy his assignment. Several Phils relievers said last week that the narrative arc was accurate, and that Park had first shown his humor and personality during that van trip.

It helped that L.A. was the destination. More than one-third of Koreans in the United States live in California, according to census data, and more than 50,000 of them live in an area of about six square miles in Los Angeles. Park played a total of nine seasons in two stints with the Dodgers; L.A. is Chan Ho's town.

In the visiting clubhouse at Dodger Stadium and around the city, Park became more outgoing. He had Korean food delivered to the ballpark for his teammates, who enjoyed the cuisine. He felt at ease in his knowledge of the city. This reporter was driving out of the stadium in heavy traffic one night and heard a knock on a window in the next lane. It was Park, stuffed into a Jeep with Chad Durbin, Chris Coste, and other teammates. Smiling broadly, Park rolled down the window and asked, "Hey, man, you need directions?"

Members of the bullpen recently devoted significant time teaching Park to spell and pronounce elbow.

PHILADELPHIA -- Chan Ho Park is pitching like he was always destined to be a reliever.

Park has earned the trust of manager Charlie Manuel, who originally viewed him as a middle reliever whose value came from being able to pitch two or three innings. Yet with J.C. Romero (strained left forearm), Chad Durbin (strained right latissimus) and Clay Condrey (strained left oblique) on the disabled list, Park has emerged as a critical and dependable late-inning arm. He is the go-to option for the seventh, setting up Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge for the final six outs.

And in July, the 36-year-old South Korea native has allowed one earned run in 13 innings, posting a 0.69 ERA with three holds.

Manuel has repeatedly said that Park's stuff plays up better in relief, when the right-hander only has to face an opposing lineup once. Park disagreed.

Park was an All-Star as a 28-year-old starter in 2001, capping off a five-year stretch with the Dodgers in which he went 75-49 with a 3.59 ERA. But he struggled mightily with three teams over the next seven seasons before returning to Los Angeles in '08, posting a 3.40 ERA as a reliever.

Earlier in the year, Park needed extra notice to get loose because he was used to a starter's routine. That, too, is beginning to change.

When the Phillies signed Chan Ho Park this offseason, he made it abundantly clear that he intended to be a starter. He tearfully declined to pitch for his native South Korea in the World Baseball Classic, saying he wanted to concentrate on stretching out to become a starter again.

Nevermind the fact that he hadn’t started regularly since 2006, when he went 12-8, with a 5.74 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP between the Dodgers and Padres. Nevermind that this capped off four straight years when he’d logged an era over 5 (nearly all of them with the Texas Rangers, a really tough place to pitch).

He’d been a starter for nearly all of his 15-year career, only moving to the bullpen after his return to Los Angeles in 2008. That season, he’d started five games, finishing with a 1-0 record, a 2.84 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. As a reliever, he’d appeared in 49 games, with a 3-4 record, a 3.84 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.

All his peripherals were better in a starting role, though the 70.1 IP he’d logged out of the bullpen far outweighed the 25.0 IP he’d gobbled up as a starter. Some of those relief stats came from his last four appearances of the year, when he surrendered 7 ER in just 2.0 total IP. Park surely used these as an argument that he was better suited as a starter.

Well, the Phillies gave him a chance to start, and he edged out the youthful J.A. Happ for the fifth starter position in spring training, racking up a 2-0 record with a 2.53 ERA in the Games That Don’t Count. Park struck out 25 in 21.2 IP while walking just 2, though he also gave up 20 hits. Happ didn’t do much worse, with a 0-0 record and a 3.15 ERA in 20 IP, striking out 14 and walking 6, while allowing 18 hits.
그러나 필리스는 박찬호의 삼진 갯수에 주목하였다. 또한 좌완 로메로가 50경기를 출장할 수 없음에 따라 좌완투수인 햅이 불펜에 남기를 기대했다.
But the Phils liked Park’s strikeout numbers, and also liked having the lefty Happ in their bullpen, since southpaw stalwart JC Romero would be unavailable for 50 games due to suspension.

So they turned the 36-year-old South Korean righty loose as their fifth starter—and he bombed.

He only managed to pitch a total of 20 IP in his first four starts, coughing up a 9.00 ERA on 28 hits (including 5 HRs). Worse, his strikeouts were a measly 11, against the same number of walks.

Surprisingly, his record only stood at 0-1, mainly because the Phillies had managed to win each of the contests by just a run or two and their bullpen came in to stop the bleeding (including 5 scoreless IP by Happ in two separate outings).

Then came the proverbial backbreaking straw, the 1.1 IP he threw against the lowly 11-25 Washington Nationals, who scored 5ER on 5 H and 4 BB against just 2 Ks. That was it for the Phils, and they put Park in the pen and promoted Happ to starter.

Park wasn’t happy about it, but it’s turned out to be a good move for both pitchers.

Happ now has a 3-0 record in 8 starts, with a 3.16 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and good supporting ratios. He was a bit better as a reliever (2.49 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, with much better secondary ratios), but it’s easier to fool batters when they only see you once a game, and easier to throw harder when you’re only out there for a few frames.

Park, however, has been transformed. He went from a 1-1, 7.29 ERA, 1.74 WHIP starter to a 2-1, 3.57 ERA, 1.37 WHIP reliever. His K/BB ratio zoomed from 1.24 to 3.13, which is what happens when you nearly double your K rate (from 5.7 K/9 to 9.9 K/9) while dropping your walk rate (from 4.6 to 3.2).

As a starter, batters had a .909 OPS against him, clubbing a .515 SLG. Out of the bullpen, opposing OPS dropped to .645, much of that in SLG, which plummeted to .318. In fact, batters have only gotten 5 extra-base hits off of him since he moved out of the rotation, and all of those are doubles (contrast that to the 10 2B, 1 3B and 5 HR they cranked off him in only about 1/3 more IP when he started).

It wouldn’t be the first time that an aging pitcher made the shift from being a career starter to an outstanding reliever. One recent example is lefty Darren Oliver, who started from 1993-2004, putting up a mediocre career line of 82-77, 5.13 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, including ten straight seasons of 4.20+ ERA for six different teams.

It’s also the curious legacy of Japanese pitchers that the relievers turn out to be far more successful than the starters. Some of this is no doubt due to the fact that most arrive here late in their careers; Park was excellent in his younger years, having begun pitching as a 21-year-old and the best Japanese MLB starter of all time, Hideo Nomo, began his MLB career at age 26.

Of his 16 appearances, eight have been with the game tied or the Phils ahead by two runs or less; only four have been blowouts, with the Phils ahead or behind by four runs or more, and two of those were in his first three relief appearances.

Manuel is learning to trust him, just as Joe Torre did last year, and it paid off for the Dodgers. In high leverage situations in 2008, he had a tOPS+ of 88, to go with a 91 under medium leverage, and 111 under low leverage conditions.

Ideally, Park can be the versatile pitcher for Philadelphia that he was for Los Angeles in 2008: a guy who can pitch 1-2 innings of relief on a regular basis, step in for a key out or two, or slide into the rotation as an emergency fifth starter. In the meantime, the promising young J.A. Happ is getting his chance to dominate as a starter—everyone wins this way, and Park can at least say he had the chance to keep the starting spot he was given.
불펜으로의 이동은 정신적으로나 육체적으로 부분적이나마 준비가 필요하다. 또한 명목상 중요도가 낮아지는 위치를 받아드려야 하는 일부 자존심에 관한 것이다. 그러나 동양계 투수들이 갖는 팀을 최우선으로 하는 성향을 갖고 있다면 박찬호는 불펜역할을 어떻게 해야 하는지 알아가게 될 것이고 필리스에게도 그렇게 하는 것이 더 나을 것이다.
The shift to the bullpen is partly one of mental and physical preparation, and partly one of ego, of accepting a position of nominally decreased importance. But if there’s one characteristic that typifies Asian players, it’s their ability to put the team first. Park’s learning how to do that, and the Phillies are the better for it.

CLEVELAND -- Travis Hafner has returned to the Indians' lineup, but he hasn't bumped Shin-Soo Choo out of the cleanup spot.
That spot is now Choo's to lose. He'll remain at No. 4 when the Indians venture back out on the road and open up a three-game set against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday.
"현재로서는 변화를 줄 만한 아무런 요인도 없다."라고 에릭 웨지 감독이 말했다.
"I don't see any point in changing things now," manager Eric Wedge said.

He entered the week a perfect 13-for-13 in stolen-base attempts.

PHILADELPHIA -- It has taken Chan Ho Park some time, but he is finally starting to feel comfortable in the Phillies' bullpen.

Not that he wouldn't love to start again.

I have more games to get more comfortable, but, obviously, I feel much better than the beginning."

Park said it was a miscommunication and he could have pitched.

CLEVELAND -- When his no-hit bid ended with a Yadier Molina double off the wall in the eighth inning of Sunday night's 3-0 victory over the Cardinals, Cliff Lee glared in the direction of right field.

Perhaps that was a silent show of frustration over Shin-Soo Choo's inability to haul in the catch that would have preserved the no-no. But if it was, Lee didn't let on postgame.

Pressed for an opinion as to whether the ball was catchable, Lee wouldn't bite, and neither would manager Eric Wedge.

"Not from my angle," Wedge said. "But it's tough [to judge] when you get over there in the corner."

For his part, Choo said he was playing shallow because Molina has lined some hits in front of outfielders.

As the ball sailed over his head, Choo had two choices: Try to chase it down at the wall, or let it bounce off the wall and be in a position to field it and prevent a triple. In any other game, Choo said he would have chosen the latter option. But with a no-hitter on the line, he said he wanted to try to make the play. Choo sprinted to the wall, but his gait seemed too slow just as the ball descended two or three steps in front of him and struck the wall about belt-high.
추신수가 볼을 잡을 수가 있었느냐라는 논쟁이 공론화되는 것을 팀은 원하지 않는다.
The debate in the wake of the game was whether Choo could have made the catch if he had laid out for the ball, but it was not a debate the Indians themselves wanted to get involved in publicly.
클리프 리가 말할 수 있는 것은 단지 "추신수가 볼을 잡기를 원했었다." 뿐이다.
"I was hoping he would get it," was all Lee would say on the matter.

추신수는 11일 캔사스시티 로열스와 경기에서 연장 10회 행운의 끝내기 안타를 기록한데 이어, 12일 세인트루이스 경기에서 4타수 3안타 3타점으로 맹활약했다.
추신수는 12일 경기에서 1회 중전 적시타, 6회 선두 타자로 나와 우전 안타, 7회 2사 만루에서 중전 적시타를 때려내어 2타점을 올렸다. 8회 1사 2,3루에선 고의 4구로 걸어나갔다.
경기 Recap 기사에서는 추신수가 이번에는 새들의 도움 없이 좋은 활약을 보였다고 적고 있다. 또한 추신수가 "새들을 보지 못해고 오늘 경기에는 새들이 필요 없었다." 라고 웃으며 말했다고 전하고 있다.

웨지 감독은 그런 상황(주자가 있는 상황) 너무 무리하지 않고 잘해내고 있다고 언급했다.
"Shin-Soo does a good job of not trying to do too much in those situations," Wedge said.
추신수는 이날 경기까지 시즌 타율 .297리, 홈런 8개를 기록하고 있다. 이 추세로 시즌을 마친다면 홈런 21개, 도루 23개가 전망되어 20-20 을 기록하는 시즌이 될 것으로 예상된다.

6/2일 샌디에고와 경기 후 기사가 올라왔다. 이날 경기에는 부상으로 빠진 브렛 마이어스를 대신 더블A에서 올라온 안토니오 바스타도가 선발 등판했다. 안토니오 바스타도는 이 경기에서 6이닝 1실점으로 호투하여 1이닝 4실점한 박찬호와 극명하게 대비되었다.
10-1로 큰 점수차로 이기고 있는 상황이니 2~3이닝을 부담 없이 던지기를 바라며 박찬호를 마운드에 올렸을 것이다. 그러나 박찬호는 1이닝 밖에 버티지 못했다. 구단 관계자나 팬들에게 큰 실망감을 준 것은 사실인 것 같다.

News: The Philadelphia Daily News reports that Phillies starter Brett Myers is likely to require surgery that would sideline him for three to four months. The Phillies are awaiting a prognosis from hip specialist Bryan Kelly, but the expectation is that he will need to undergo surgery to repair a torn labrum.
이렇게 되면 마이어스의 자리를 누가 대신하게 되는지를 전망하는 기사에서 박찬호의 이름이 거론되고 있다. philly.com에 올라온 Hip surgery likely for Phillies starter Myers (Posted on Fri, May. 29, 2009 By DAVID MURPHY Philadelphia Daily News) 제목의 기사에서는 박찬호와 Kyle Kendrick을 마이어스 자리를 대신할 후보로 보고 보고 있다. 켄드릭은 마이어스 등판 예정일인 다음주 화요일에 마이너 등판이 예정되어 있다.
In the meantime, the Phillies have several options should Myers need surgery. Righthander Chan Ho Park spent the first month and a half of the season in the rotation before losing his job to lefthander J.A. Happ. Righthander Kyle Kendrick, who spent the last half of 2007 and all of 2008 in the Phillies' rotation, is 4-3 with a 4.25 ERA at Triple A Lehigh Valley and is on schedule to pitch next Tuesday, when Myers' next turn would be.

If Myers can't pitch, Amaro said the Phillies immediately would look internally to fill the void in the rotation. He said Carlos Carrasco, Kyle Kendrick, Andrew Carpenter and Antonio Bastardo are candidates. It appears Chan Ho Park is not a candidate and will remain in the bullpen.
But an internal solution might not be the final solution. The Phillies are expected to step up their efforts to acquire starting pitching, although that will not be easy.
