언어 장애인의 의사소통을 돕는 앱(App)

지난번에는 시각 장애인을 위한 앱(App)에 관련된 내용을 소개해드렸는데요, 이번에 언어 장애인의 의사소통을 돕는 앱(App)이 있다는 내용을 소개합니다. 외국에서는 장애를 갖은 사람에게도 차별이 없도록 많은 노력을 하고 있군요.

언어 장애인의 의사소통을 돕는 앱(App)



Springwise를 정기적으로 방문하는 독자들은 시각 장애인을 위해 지폐의 액면가를 알려주는 LookTel Money Reader 앱을 기억할 것이다. 이렇듯 장애인을 위한 앱 기반 기술의 또다른 예로 Verbally가 있다. 아이패드용 앱으로 언어 장애인를 위해 입력된 문장이나 단어를 들려 준다.


Regular readers of Springwise may remember our article on the LookTel Money Reader app, which can announce the value of paper currency to blind users. In another example of app-based technology coming to the aid of disabled users, we recently came across Verbally, an iPad app which speaks typed sentences and words for users who are unable to talk.


Verbally는 미국 회사인 Intuary의 첫 프로젝트로 의사소통의 확장과 대체용 앱으로 표현되며 앱 스토어에서 무료로 사용할 수 있다. 커뮤니케이션을 가능한 쉽게할 수 있도록 디자인 되었고 앱의 키보드를 말하는 속도에 맞게 여러가지 모드로 변환할 수 있다.

Verbally, the first project by US-based Intuary, is described as an "Augmentative and Alternative Communication" app, and is available free of charge from the App Store. Designed to make communication as easy as possible, the app’s keyboard can switch between different modes to speed up conversations. 


예를 들어 단어들의 철자를 모두 쓸 수 있는 표준 문자 키보드와 50가지 상용 단어를 탑재한 키보드, 그리고 12가지의 선택 가능한 구문이 있는 키보드까지 있다.  앱은 주소록으로부터 사람 이름, 도시 이름, 회사명 등으로 부터 예상 단어 모음집을 구성하고 이를 서로 다른 여러가지 키에 매핑하여 사용자가 입력하는 철자에 따라 단어를 예측하는 기능을 갖고 있다. 이 기능은 모바일 폰에 있는 입력된 단어를 예측하는 기능과 비슷하다.


For example, as well as a standard letter keyboard for spelling out words, there is a keyboard loaded with a list of 50 commonly used words and up to a dozen commonly used phrases to select from. The app will also generate word predictions as users type, similar to predictive texting on mobile phones, with a key difference being that it can import names, cities and company names from users’ address books and add these into the word prediction bank. 


다른 사람과 의사소통하기 위해 앱을 사용하는 사람들은 전체 문장이나 입력한 단어 또는 선택한 단어를 개별적으로 남성 또는 여성의 음성으로 읽을지 고를 수 있다. 더 흥미를 끄는 기능으로 벨 소리를 내는 옵션과 마지막 말했던 구문을 반복하는 옵션도 있다.

장애인에게 이득을 줄 수 있는 기술은 끝이 없을 것 같다.  


To communicate with others, users of the app can then choose to have the entire phrase read out by a male or female voice, or to have individual words read out as they enter or select them. For those struggling to attract attention, there is also the option to sound a chime, or to repeat the last phrase spoken.

메신저와 같은 인스턴스 메시징(IM)을 통해 들어오는 내용을 실시간으로 다른 언어로 번역하는 앱을 소개한 기사입니다.

영어에 대해 유독 스트레스를 많이 받는 우리나라 사람들이 사용하면 편할 것으로 보입니다만, 아시다시피 영어와 우리말의 어순에 많은 차이가 있어 번역 정확도가 얼마나 될지 궁금하네요.

아무튼 IT기술이 사람들을 점점 편하게 해주는 방향으로 진보하는 것은 틀림 없는 것 같습니다.

실시간 인스턴스 메시징(IM) 번역 서비스 앱
App provides real-time instant messaging translation service




2008년 SpeakLike의 웹기반 인스턴스 메시징(IM) 실시간 번역 서비스를 소개한 적이 있었는데 최근 비슷한 서비스를 모바일 앱으로 제공하는 회사가 있다. 미국 TNT Creantion이라는 회사에서 만든 TransFire 앱은 실시간으로 인스턴스 메시징 대화 내용를 50개 이상 언어로 번역해 준다. 이 앱은 현재 아이폰, 아이팟터치 그리고 아이패드에서 사용 가능하다.

Back in 2008 we wrote about SpeakLike's real-time translation service for web-based instant messaging, and recently we came across a like-minded contender offering a similar service as a mobile app. US-based TNT Creations' TransFire app provides real-time instant messaging translation in more than 50 languages for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.


TransFire 앱을 구글 Chat에 연결하면 이 앱은 들어오는 채팅 메시지를 실시간 자동으로 번역한다. 예를 들어 영어 사용자와 일어 사용자가 대화를 한다고 할 때, 앱은 영어 사용자를 위해 들어오는 메시지를 영어로, 나가는 메시지를 일어로 번역하게 된다. 또한 TransFire 앱은 번역한 텍스트를 소리내어 읽어 줌으로 사용자들이 외국어를 공부하는데도 사용할 수 있다. 그리고 자주 사용하는 번역 문장을 저장하는 기능도 갖고 있다.

Once a user has connected the app to their Google Chat, TransFire will automatically translate any incoming chat messages in real-time. For example, in a conversation between an English language speaker and a Japanese language speaker, the app would translate all incoming messages to English for the English language speaker, and all outgoing messages to Japanese. The app can also be used to help users learn foreign languages by sounding translated text aloud, and there are options to store favorite translated phrases.


이 앱은 구글 Chat 전용으로만 사용하는 것은 아니다. 사용자가 웹사이트 등에서 텍스트를 복사하여 TransFire으로 번역할 수도 있다. 현재 TransFire는 앱 스토에서 1.99달러에 구입할 수 있다.

Nor does the app need to be used exclusively with Google Chat – users can copy in text from any source, such as a website, and ask TransFire to translate. The app is currently available from the App Store for USD 1.99.


모바일 커뮤니케이션은 글로벌 사용자간 경계를 계속 무너뜨리고 있다. 언어의 차이가 현재 남아 있는 몇가지 장애물 중 하나이다. 자동화 실시간 번역 서비스는 당신 스스로 테스트해 볼 만한 기회를 주는 솔루션이다.

Mobile communications continue to break down borders between global users, with language differences presenting one of the few remaining obstacles.
