Loaiza, favored to beat out Chan Ho Park for the fifth-starter job in large part because of his guaranteed contract, allowed three runs in his first inning of relief, followed by two scoreless innings. He said he's only familiar with starting and had trouble timing when to begin his warmup in mid-game.
Loaiza allowed four of the first five batters he faced to reach base, but escaped further damage with a double-play grounder to end his first inning, held the Rockies scoreless the next two innings and went down to the bullpen at game's end to continue throwing.
Torre said Loaiza's guaranteed $6.5 million salary for 2008 is a "major consideration" in determining his role to start the season, all in the name of player inventory.
"He's had enough good days here," Torre said of Loaiza, who has a 4.20 ERA. Loaiza and Park will split Saturday night's historic game at the Coliseum against the Red Sox, according to the manager.

Kuo was shaky, allowing two walks and two runs in 1 2/3 innings after four scoreless outings. But manager Joe Torre excused Kuo's performance, an indicator that he's got a good chance to make the staff as a swingman, a second lefty to complement Joe Beimel and one who can pitch multiple innings as a natural starter. Kuo is coming off his fourth elbow operation. "He has no options, he's left-handed and has a great arm," Torre said, offering the attributes Kuo brought into this spring. "Something happens the last week of Spring Training. Pitchers put more on their shoulders than they need to. I thought he overthrew the ball."
Chan Ho Park continued his longshot bid for a roster spot, holding Arizona scoreless for 3 1/3 innings before walking a pair and allowing a three-run blast to D-backs catcher Chris Snyder. They were the first runs Park had allowed all spring. Even if he does not get the nod over Esteban Loaiza as the fifth starter, Park could secure a staff spot as a long reliever if the club keeps 12 pitchers. If not, he could be sent to Triple-A until May 15, when he has an out in his contract

Penny is likely to be followed by Derek Lowe, Chad Billingsley and Hiroki Kuroda. The Dodgers won't need a fifth starter until April 8, with Esteban Loaiza and Chan Ho Park the finalists. Lowe started the three previous Opening Days for Los Angeles.
Chan Ho Park allowed three runs on three hits in four innings for the Dodgers. He struck out three and walked three. There probably is no room for Park, a non-roster invitee, in the Los Angeles rotation because Esteban Loiza is in line to be the fifth starter.
"You just have to look at the staff as a whole and then get as much information as you can," Torre said of where Park might fit. "I know you're tired of hearing that, but that's all I can tell you. Just get as much information as you can and try to put it together."
