스프링캠프에서 좋은 기록이 꼭 선발을 보장하는 것이 아니다 라고 적고 있지만, 두비 투수코치는 선발투수 가능성이 보이면 선발로 기용할 수 있다는 듯이 인터뷰 하였다. 또한, 매뉴얼 감독도 박찬호선수를 어디에 활용하는 것이 더 적절한지는 판단해봐야 할 문제라고 하면서, 선발 투수로서 활용할 수 있다는 판단이 서면 불펜에서 역할은 덜 중요해 질 수 있다 라고 언급하고 있다.

두비 투수코치인 스프링 캠프를 시작하면서 모든 (5선발) 후보들이 같은 출발점에서 시작하지 않는다는 것을 시인했다. 그러면서 그는 지난 두 시즌 동안 21승을 거둔 우완투수 카일 켄드릭이 5선발로 유력하다고 했다.

Pitching coach Rich Dubee conceded at the beginning of camp that all the candidates weren't beginning from the same starting line when he awarded the inside track to righthander Kyle Kendrick, based on his 21 wins over the last two seasons.

Dubee said he hasn't talked to Park specifically about his stated desire to start. "But I know that he passed up an opportunity to pitch for Korea in the World Baseball Classic, because he wanted to come here and win that spot."

박찬호는 WBC 오프닝 경기에서 한국이 대만을 이기는 것을 본 후, 한국의 일방적인 승리에 매우 기쁘다는 말했다.

Park, who watched Korea beat Chinese Taipei in its opening game yesterday afternoon, made a point of mentioning how happy he was with his country's one-sided victory.

"나는 이러한 젊은 선수들 중 많은 선수들에게 (메이저리그) 문이 개방될 것을 바란다." "사람들이 알고 있는 것 보다 더 많은 좋은 선수, 좋은 투수들이 있다." 라고 박찬호가 말했다.

"I dream that the door will be open for many of these young players," he said. "There are more good players, good pitchers, there than people know."

He also repeated that it's "very important" to him that he start, not just for himself but for the fans in his country who enjoy having a chance to watch him pitch every fifth day. "I'm glad I can stay in the major leagues, but starting is important for me and my career and the fans in Korea."

Even if he has the best stats, they also must weigh whether he would play a more valuable role as a reliever or a starter.

"불펜에서 한 투수의 가치는 그 선수가 여러 더 많은 경기에 등판하기 때문에 매우 중요하다." 라고 두비 투수코치가 인정했다. "그렇지만, 동시에 만일 박찬호가 뛰어난 결과를 보여서 그가 14승 또는 16승을 거둬줄 수 있다고 판단되면, 그러한 방식으로 (선발 투수로) 활용할 수 있을 것이다." 라고 말했다. 

"The value of a guy in the bullpen can be awfully important because he's in a lot more games," Dubee acknowledged. "At the same time, if [Park] is lights out and we think he can win 14 to 16 games, that's the way we'll go."

매뉴얼 감독은 "그것은 우리가 그를 어디에 가장 필요로 하는지 판단하는 것이다. 만일 우리가 그를 5일마다 등판하여 6~7이닝을 책임져 주는 역할에 가장 적절한 선수라고 판단한다면 불펜에서의 한 자리는 덜 중요해 질 수 있다." 고 부연했다.

Added Manuel: "It's where we think we need him the most. At the same time, if we think he's the best guy to do the job every fifth day and he can take us into the sixth or seventh inning, that spot in the bullpen becomes less important."
